A grizzly and cold November morning. Detective Sergeant Kate Linton is called on Glastonbury Tor where a young woman has been strangled. Twelve holes are found at the scene, surrounded by wax, evidence of garden flares - the only connection to two other unsolved cases. When another young woman and a TV celebrity go missing, Linton is in a race against time to find the serial killer before he strikes again. But, when her journalist ex-boyfriend is singled out as a chief suspect, Linton feels that events are heading a bit too close to home. A Means of Escape presents an intricate, gripping mystery plot, combined with a focus on the heroine's personal life as she juggles an unwelcome attraction for her good-looking and charismatic superior with her efforts to become closer to her estranged family. A Means of Escape is the first in a series of psychologically driven crime novels.

Kate Linton is a Detective Sergeant living in Glastonbury. A young woman is found dead in strange circumstances in what looks as though it could be some sort of ritual or sacrificial killing. Then another young woman disappears off the streets of the town apparently into thin air. Kate and her boss - Rob Brown - are desperate to prevent another killing especially when they realise that there have been two similar deaths in Avebury. Sam Jenkins needs to be found quickly because she is an insulin dependent diabetic and doesn't have her insulin with her.I found this an interesting start to a police procedural series. Sam's disappearance and the glimpses the reader gets of her with her kidnapper provide a tense background to the police investigation. I liked the Glastonbury setting with its New Age influence. I thought the characters were well drawn especially the spiky relationship between Kate and her boss. I did get a little confused by the continual changing between the police and Sam's relatives and friends though I could see why it was done. I could have found it confusing because I read the book in small chunks but altogether I found that aspect of the book didn't work for me and it is the reason why I have given the book four stars rather than five.
If you like police procedural crime novels with a different setting then give this one a try - I found it an interesting read in spite of my criticism above and in spite of the rather too prevalent use of swear words. The story kept me reading because I liked the characters and wanted to find out whether Sam was rescued in time. I have just started reading the next one in the series and I'm finding that a good read too.

A Means of Escape Kate Linton Series Book 1 eBook Joanna Price Reviews
There is a really good story in this book. Sadly, though, it is buried under a lot of sudden scene changes and flashbacks. The author seems to go out of her way to make things more mysterious (such as hinting at something relating to Sam's sister and her ex-boyfriend), but it always turns out to be nothing. There's a lot of police procedural, but none of it seems to actually lead anywhere. (The major clues comes from sudden realizations by one of the investigators.) The book starts slowly, and I actually put it down for several weeks before I could bring myself to pick it up again. (It picks up about 25% of the way through.)
This is a very promising start of a new police series set in Glastonbury featuring DS Kate Linton who has a challenging task -- to find the killer of three young women and a third missing girl who has been kidnapped, possibly by the killer.
Just to make her job more complicated, a reality TV star also goes missing in Glastonbury at the same time, but is this just coincidence or has the killer now kidnapped two women as well?
Kate, newly single since her split with her boyfriend, is confronted with the embarrassment of a past liaison in the shape of a local journalist who becomes a suspect. Her strained relationship with her male colleague changes as the case progresses which adds an interesting light touch to the dark storyline.
As the police search continues we are given several tantalising glimpses of just what's going on in the head of the kidnapper by the way he talks to his kidnap victim, which didn't make any sense until the reveal.
Joanna Price kept the suspense building until the very end when all the answers to the questions are neatly tied up -- I didn't guess the ending!
Altogether, an unpredictable storyline that features characters that I'd like to read about again as this series develops.
