"At once, names like Ionesco, Beckett, and Albee come to mind, but then are topped by the understanding that this voice has an even more unsettling, hard-hitting edge." -Phil Abrams
Instructions for Reading The Humble Assessment
Step one Take a deep breath.
Meet Mr. Humble. He is the sixteenth person to be interviewed for the position of Financial Controller. He needs this job. But he's not going to beg. Yet. Follow Kris Saknussemm, the masterful creator of Zanesville, Sinister Miniatures and Reverend America, on a dark and narrow path through the malign terrors of the modern American corporate machine. He will show you a fish bowl full of crickets. He will show you a tarantula as big as a suburban home. He will show you a woman in a black lace bra, a man in a gorilla mask. The Humble Assessment is a masterpiece of modern theatre. In a few short pages, Saknussemm will take you in, make you comfortable, then rip your heart out before you even notice he's been holding a dagger the whole time. Meet Mr. Humble. They've been watching him his whole life.

Kris Saknussemm’s postmodern, absurdist play The Humble Assessment startles, grips, and then stuns. The play depicts the inhumane power that the human resources departments of corporations wield. Here unfathomable “interviewers” (a mysterious woman, a man in a wheelchair) and “operations manager” (a man in a gorilla mask) proceed to turn applicants into crazed creatures. Saknussemm’s highly symbolic, darkly humorous characters, situation, and language mesmerize readers (and viewers when the play is seen on the stage). Everything is disturbingly symbolic, perhaps most of all, the tarantula projected on the screen and shown being fed crickets. The rapid-fire dialogue twists the interview responses of Richard Humble, the main applicant, as he is “assessed” with accusatory, humiliating questions so bizarre as to take your breath away. I am reminded of the wordplay of Rosencranz and Guildenstern, but this dialogue surpasses that and surprises with its sinister symbolism. And how do these interviewers know so much about him? Neither Richard Humble nor we know where we are going—because only an acute imagination could envision it—until it is too late. Definitely a revolutionary play in both its powerful social critique and its innovative transformation of theatre!Product details

The Humble Assessment Kris Saknussemm 9781621050810 Books Reviews
Loved it! For anyone juggling family, career, hobbies and attention spans, this is the epitome of how perfect dialogue cuts the extraneous details found in something as complex and simple as a man at the pinnacle of crisis disguised as job interview.~Devora
My humble assessment of the book is that it is brilliant. What begins as an absurd Monty Python-ish take on a job interview twists into something much more substantial. This is certainly one of the most clever things my eyes have been fortunate enough to take in this year. Beneath the surface of this hilarious play (within the confines of a book), there are connections to things that the reader will not see until the very end. Well done and recommended.
love it ... very interesting

It gets darker and darker until it all makes sense. Very worth reading.
An intensely dark foray into the human psyche and how far one man will go to the job he wants.
This screenplay is deep and surreal and I badly want to see the movie now.
