It was short, but the writing was not bad.Girl spends one night with rock star...
Days after finishing this one, I am not sure if it was worth the $2.99 I paid for it. Felt more like a $.99 read.
You are given very little info about either character. A lot of reviewers praised this about the story saying there was a mystery to the characters. I am not sure about that. I would like to know why the hero felt so "tortured".

Gilded Cage edition by Alexandra Richland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a good story. An enjoyable short read. I honestly wasn't expecting some aspects of it and felt it was out of place for the beautifully written way it started out. I won't tell what it was as to not spoil the story, but I feel it took away from it overall.
I wouldn't not recommend this for someone to read. I just felt like it could have been handled a little differently. I'd pick up another story from Richland in the future.
Wow!! Heavy, sad, romantic, mysterious. This story will no doubt re-play in my thoughts as I re-live the coming together of a pair of lost tragic souls.
I was blown away! The story line was a journey into a place most don't like to Descend. So many aspects of vulnerability, success and longing.
I liked this book for a different reason I like others from Alexandria. This book is a sad book. It's a dark emotion book. If she does decide to write another one for this book I hope that the two main characters can find a way to make it work even with the things going on in his head. They both deserve a happy ending.
32 pages. All it took was 32 pages for me to become a fan of Alexandra Richland. For a short story, this packs a powerful punch. How else can you describe a story that effortlessly mixes eroticism and loneliness? Gilded Cage resonates much like a Shirley Jackson or Karen Russell story. Wisely choosing to share the story through a nameless narrator, the story became personal. Richland's poetic rhythm encouraged the words to disintegrate from the page and morph into a visuals. I was left watching the lonely, world famous rock star who is living in a gilded cage. I could smell his scent, sense his magnetism, and feel his melancholy. I was uncomfortable right along with the narrator during awkward pauses and found myself fidgeting, trying to find the right words for her to say.
The mark of an excellent short story is when finished, I have to feel so connected with the characters that I wonder about their fate. I worry for them, the rock star and the narrator. In addition, I have the need to discuss the actions behind the characters; more than what was simply written on the page.
I recommend this short story. It's a quick read and it will stay with you.
'Gilded Cage' has completely won me over, and convinced me of Alexandra Richland's special talent.
The story, without giving too much detail, is a tale of a rock star and a young woman finding one another in a musical event, in a musical and rainy city, and creating a special yet complicated connection.
Much is left to the imagination of the reader - a dimension that adds depth and complexity to the writing. As opposed to other stories in which the lack of detail can hinder the writing, 'Gilded Cage' was quite the opposite. I found myself wondering about the characters and their past, their names, their motivations.. yet at the same time, I really didn't mind me not knowing all this, because it added mystery and a certain aura to the characters, the scenario and the city.
Alex Richland chose very wisely which details to omit and which to expose - in a genius way that makes you want to read more about these characters.
The backdrop of the story is important as well. Seattle, being the capital of grunge music, is an important icon and suits the narrative well. The rainy day in Seattle may seem ordinary, but in fact is important to the storyline as it puts the reader in an accurate mood to interpret this story.
Lastly, the title - 'Gilded Cage' - is a brilliant play of words that underscore the characters and the story's main message - that not all as it seems.
I truly believe that Alexandra Richland has the potential to become a prominent figure in contemporary literature. Her writing is brilliant and well thought through. Keep an eye out for her.. she'll do well!
Alexandra Richland has written a short and stunning little tale that left me haunted by its sad brilliance. Set in the music center of the northwest USA, Seattle, Washington, this starkly engrossing glimpse covers an encounter between a writer and an aging, melancholy lead singer of a long time popular band. Although minimally painted with carefully chosen, emotion-clad words, this brief encounter between seemingly opposite types weaves a tale of a brief spark that changes both lives forever. I was moved to tears. I cared deeply about and was totally engaged with these characters. As a voracious reader, I was provided with everything I look for in a piece of art, slice of life, like this. Bravo! I can't wait to see what comes next for this talented writer!
